Green Fingers. Dark Clouds

(Originally published 23 Jul 2013)

I saw an article on BBC Breakfast recently about mental health and how gardening can help you.  Monty Don was interviewed and it stated he’d been suffering from depression for 30 years.  Poor guy.  He also came up with a sentence which really reverberated; “Earth Heals”.  I like that and I can certainly relate to that theory.

For the past 4-ish weeks I’ve been going to The Therapeutic Garden run by my local Mental Health services.  Now I’m not and never have been much of a gardener .  I don’t think I ever will be, but I do enjoy my time there.  There is something very comforting about being there.  It’s a peaceful, stress-free and nurturing environment.  Those few that attend are nice, the ladies who run it are lovely and whilst I haven’t got my hands dirty enough for the earth to heal me yet (maybe that’s where I’m going wrong) the little project I’m working on takes me away from it all for a few hours.  If you ever get the opportunity to go, give it a chance.  It might not help your ability to spell, but it may heel.
